Reflections from Ambon 2026

On Wed 4th November 2026, members heard from six club members who travelled to Ambon (Indonesia) in August/September 2026 to complete community projects, one of which involved working on a Maternal and Children’s Health Centre.
They were joined by members of the Rotary Clubs of Cardinia and Highton, and former RCWB member Kath Venters.
A blog of the travels (compiled by Kath Venters) can be enjoyed by clicking the link below.
Ambon Travel BlogOur six members, plus Kath who joined us on Zoom, presented to the club this morning, each providing some experiences that he/she found memorable. Some of these were:
- Clare Bennett spoke about a project involving the provision of rubbish bine and cleaning up a previously polluted and rubbish-strewn area.
- Sue Lewis was impressed with how money spent matched community needs. This has come about through the foresight of the program’s founder, Rob MacDougall.
- Mark Bennett was moved by the warmth and joy of the children he met during a visit to the orphanage.
- Vicky Fawcus became involved in a project which involved the donation of sewing machines, followed up with lessons on how to use them effectively.
- Jane Auchettl, who has visited Ambon many times, spoke about how the project has evolved over the years and has played an important role in empowering the local community.
- Jim Nugent was particularly moved with how members of the team were accepted in local families.
- Kath Venters spoke about the enthusiastic involvement of locals in the projects.

The Ambon project is an excellent example of Rotarians doing excellent work both locally and internationally, and the above members are to be congratulated for their generosity.
