Planting Day At Rotary Park

Rotary Centennial Park was treated to further planting, tree trimming and installation of a blue stone pedestal to house a bird identification board at a working bee held on Sunday 31st May, 2026.

The above developments were carried out by 12 volunteers; 7 Rotarians, 2 friends of Rotary and two enthusiastic sons of our newest member Sel.

While the aim was to plant 500 tube stock, we achieved 125. These plants consisted of understory shrubs, ground covers and grasses. Combined with previously planted indigenous eucalyptus species, it will develop into an area of biodiversity and quickly become a pollinator park.

The club’s permit to develop the park required us to import top soil for planting so as not to disturb any Aboriginal artifacts that may be present. The imported soil is creating a weed problem which is being slowly and steadily over come.

While removal – digging out - is hard work it is satisfying to see weed free areas. Used cardboard has been installed as a heavy mulch being held in place by the tree trimmings. Reuse/recycle in practice.

Another planting day will be planned soon, watch out for the date and join in the fun and companionship.

Rotary Centennial Park, an ongoing project of the Rotary Club of Wendouree Breakfast, is located on the corner of Remembrance Drive & Ballarat Link Road, Cardigan (opposite Lucas Town Centre).
